Baggage

Most airlines have size and weight restrictions for check-in, hand baggage and on the number of items of luggage permitted. Please check this information with your airline before heading to the airport.

Baggage

Salalah Airport has three reclaim belts at the arrivals section. The Flight Information Display System (FIDS) indicates the flight number and the status of the luggage delivery for the inbound flight.

Please note that all hold and hand baggage from international or domestic flights may be subjected to screening and X-ray by customs prior to leaving the baggage claim area.

All the passengers have to ensure that their bag has at least one flat surface of the bag. As per the Airport standard, the baggage should have all sides flat or at least 1 flat surface on the bag. If the baggage is not having a flat surface, then they passenger will have to repack the baggage to ensure the Airport Baggage standards are followed.

Baggage must not have ropes and mats rapped to the bag.

Trolleys in the arrival reclaim areas are available for free. A porter service is also available and can be used by any passenger, wherein they will be assisted all the way to the arrival public area.

Oversize & Fright Items

The maximum weight permissible for any one bag or item is 32kg. Passengers who have luggage weighing in excess of this will be required to split their luggage. If the passenger does not have an additional bag, boxes of varying sizes car be purchased from Seal & Go supplier located close to the check-in hall.

Most airlines have size and weight restrictions for check-in and hand baggage. Excess baggage will be charged by weight and oversize bags may not be permitted on board. Airlines also have restrictions on the number of items of luggage permitted. Please check this information with your airline before your trip.

Oversized Luggage / Out of Gauge:

The oversized luggage counter is situated close to the Visa Cancellation Office. Once checked in, the passenger will have to obtain a tag for his/her oversized luggage from the counter staff and proceed to the oversized luggage counter to drop off the luggage. The bag will then be transported to the aircraft.

Salalah Airport also has a designated Baggage Repacking Area at the end of Check-In counter Zone A, where passengers can re-pack their bag if it is not matching with the Baggage policies. The ground marking to reach the Baggage Repacking area is also done in and around the Check-In counters.

Pets & Animals

If the passenger is travelling with pets, then this should be coordinated and confirmed with the relevant airline to make sure all the required documentation is completed before they travel. This is to ensure that there are no delays with airport authorities on the day of travel.

Prohibited and Restricted Items

There are certain items that you must not take in your carry-on baggage because they present a security risk. If you are not sure whether an item is prohibited or not, check with your airline, pack it in your checked baggage, or leave it at home.

You will be required to surrender any prohibited items you are carrying before you board the flight. Airports and airlines are under no obligation to store or return surrendered items.

List of prohibited items in Hand luggage

All international flights have restrictions on items that can be carried on board in hand luggage. To ease your journey, we suggest that all sharp items are placed in your hold baggage (checked in bag) and only items of value or items required whilst onboard the aircraft are carried in your hand baggage.

Liquids allowed in your hand luggage

In line with international regulations, only liquid and gel containers of 100ml or less may be taken on board in hand luggage.

It is a security requirement that all liquids be placed in a see-through plastic bag (provided at the airport). Liquids exceeding 100ml will be confiscated and destroyed.

Passengers with medical conditions who need to carry needles or syringes must be able to show the medication with an approved pharmaceutical prescription.

Prohibited Hand luggage items list

The following articles are prohibited in the cabin of an aircraft and in security restricted areas for security reasons:

a) Guns, firearms and other devices that discharge projectiles designed to cause serious injury by discharging a projectile, or capable of being mistaken for such devices, including:

1. Firearms of all types, including pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns;

2. Toy guns, replicas and imitation firearms capable of being mistaken for real weapons;

3. Component parts of firearms, excluding telescopic sights;

4. Compressed air and carbon dioxide guns, including pistols, pellet guns, rifles, and ball bearing guns;

5. Signal flare pistols and starter pistols;

6. Bows, crossbows, and arrows;

7. Harpoon guns and spear guns;

8. Slingshots and catapults

b) Stunning devices designed specifically to stun or immobilize, including:

1. Devices for shocking, such as stun guns and stun batons;

2. Animal stunners and animal killers;

3. Disabling and incapacitating chemicals, gases and sprays, such as mace, pepper or capsicum sprays, acid sprays, animal repellent sprays, and tear gas.

c) Objects with sharp points or sharp edges capable of being used to cause serious injury, including: items designed for chopping, such as axes, hatchets and cleavers;

1. Ice axes and ice picks;

2. Razor blades and box cutters;

3. Knives with blades of more than 6 cm;

4. Scissors with blades of more than 6 cm as measured from the fulcrum;

5. Martial arts equipment with sharp points or sharp edges;

6. Swords and sabers;

d) Workers’ tools capable of being used either to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of aircraft, including:

1. Crowbars;

2. Drills and drill bits, including cordless portable power drills;

3. Tools with blades or shafts more than 6 cm capable of use as weapons, such as screwdrivers and chisels;

4. Saws, including cordless portable power saws;

5. Blowtorches;

6. Bolt guns and nail guns;

e) Blunt instruments capable of being used to cause serious injury when used to hit, including:

1. Baseball and softball bats;

2. Clubs and batons, such as billy clubs, blackjacks, and night sticks;

3. Martial arts equipment;

f) Explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable of being used to cause serious injury or threatening the safety of aircraft, including:

1. Ammunition;

2. Blasting caps;

3. Detonators and fuses;

4. Replica or imitation explosive devices;

5. Mines, grenades, and other explosive military stores;

6. Pyrotechnics, including fireworks;

7. Smoke-generating canisters or cartridges;

8. Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives;

g) Liquids, Aerosols & Gels (LAG’s) as specified in the guidance material for security controls of LAG’s.

Explosive or incendiary substances or devices capable of being used to cause serious injury or threatening the safety of aircraft are prohibited in the hold of an aircraft for safety reasons, including the following (rules granting exemptions under defined circumstances may exist):

1. With the approval of the operator, certain cartridges may be permitted for transport in hold baggage under conditions specified in Part 8, Chapter 1, 1.1.2, of the Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (Doc 9284);

2. Blasting caps;

3. Detonators and fuses;

4. Mines, grenades and other explosive military stores;

5. Pyrotechnics, including fireworks;

6. Smoke-generating canisters or cartridges;

7. Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives.

Lost/Damage Items

In cases where a passenger has lost their bag or the bag has been misplaced, the passenger has to make sure that they retain the baggage identification tag that was given to them when first checking in.

If the passenger’s baggage does not appear in the baggage reclaim belt/carousel, then they should proceed to the Oman Air Baggage Enquiry counter which is located at the reclaim area. The baggage enquiry counter will assist the passenger and provide a claim reference for baggage retrieval and follow up.

Baggage wrapping:

A baggage wrapping facility is available at Salalah Airport through provided by the supplier ‘Seal and Go’. It is located in the Check-In area.
